The original subclass of Totem Warrior has an incredibly small number of choices to chose from. Since 5th Edition seems to be the "create your own narrative" edition, I feel like offering more choices on this subclass, to encourage Barbarians to personalize their characters and add more flavor to their adventures, is paramount.

Feel free to take any of these bases and twist, mold, splice - whatever it takes to fit them into your story in a desirable way. At 3rd level you pick your first totem. The animal of the totem is a creature from which you draw inspiration and possibly base your philosophies of life around. You may even adopt physical characteristics based on the creature chosen.

Keep in mind the chosen creature will not lock you into its path; you may pick different animals each milestone. At 6th level you gain yet another path option. Any path may be taken, regardless of your choice at 3rd level. At 14th level you arrive at the final steps of your primal soul searching; here you chose a final totem. This totem, as before, can be chosen regardless of previous choices.

The most thematically appropriate option would be for your Barbarian to hunt the relevant animal of your choice. You must make or acquire a physical totem object -an amulet or similar adornment—that incorporates fur or feathers, claws, teeth, or bones of the totem animal. In order to facilitate this I would speak to your DM and set out what type of totem you wish to get, and ask if they could facilitate a hunt scenario for this particular animal into your campaign.

This is all mechanical optimization for a Barbarian character. This first run through is a compilation from several sources, and I have made edits as I have worked on it. I mainly wanted to grab the information before it was deleted by Wizards of the Coast. This is all just complete opinion, and I will tweak it as I read through your comments and suggestions. I would stay away. If you have to choose Standard Array, then the choices depend on what Race you choose. With a Half-Orc, I would first choose: That would bring them up to with racial bonuses. That would be 15 — 15 — 15 — 8 — 8 -8 with point buy, and with Half-Orc gets you: Strength [15] — Your offensive output is tied to your Strength score with nearly half of your class features tied to this ability. Constitution [14] — Another top tier stat.

Hit points are just too important to let slide. If you want to stay unarmored, it is doubly important. Dexterity [13] — Highly desirable. If you plan to be a Dexterity Based Barbarian, then switch this with Strength. Intelligence [8] — Classic Barbarian dump stat.

Darkvision remains a great choice. Savage Attacks with a great axe is super strong starting off at the start. All in all a great choice for an offensively minded Barbarian. I love playing a Halfling, the down side is being a small slow creature that gets disadvantage with the typical Barbarian weapons. I would dip a few levels of Rogue to take advantage of Sneak Attacks with finesse weapons you can still use Strength with those.

In battle, your totem spirit fills you with supernatural might, adding magical fuel to your barbarian rage. Most barbarian tribes consider a totem animal to be kin to a particular clan.
